In the early stage of the development of electric bicycles, due to the limitations of battery technology and the performance of electric bicycles, the heat generated by the battery was relatively small, and the requirement for the cooling system was not high. Therefore, the natural cooling method came into being and was widely used. At that time, electric bicycles mainly aimed to meet the basic travel needs. The battery capacity was small, and the cruising range was also short, generally about 100 km, and the battery pack capacity was about a dozen kWh. Natural cooling relied on the convection of natural wind between the battery box and the outside world to dissipate heat. There was no additional cooling device. This method had the advantages of simple structure, low cost, no space occupation, no energy consumption, and no risk of liquid leakage. It could meet the heat dissipation requirements of electric bicycle batteries at that time.

As time went by, the usage scenarios and demands of electric bicycles gradually increased, and people’s requirements for the performance of electric bicycles also became higher and higher. The energy density of batteries continued to increase, and more powerful motors were applied, resulting in more and more heat generated during the charging and discharging of batteries. The limitations of the natural cooling method began to emerge. Its heat dissipation efficiency was low, and it was unable to effectively deal with the heat generated by high – power batteries. In high – temperature environments or during long – time riding, the battery temperature was prone to be too high. This would not only lead to the attenuation of the battery’s cruising range but also accelerate the aging of the battery, affecting the service life of the battery and the overall performance of the electric bicycle.

Although there were these problems, the natural cooling method was still used in some low – end or small – sized electric bicycles that were sensitive to cost and had low – performance requirements because its simple structure and low cost could meet the needs of specific consumer groups. However, with the continuous progress of electric bicycle technology, the natural cooling method gradually could not meet the mainstream needs of the market and was gradually replaced by other more efficient cooling methods, such as forced air cooling and liquid cooling.

The following is the relevant table:

StageCharacteristicsAdvantagesDisadvantagesApplication Scenarios
Early stageThe battery generates less heat and relies on the convection of natural wind and the battery box to dissipate heatSimple structure, low cost, no space occupation, no energy consumption, no risk of liquid leakageLow heat dissipation efficiency, unable to cope with high – power heat generation. The battery is prone to overheating at high temperatures, resulting in cruising range attenuation and agingEarly – stage electric bicycles that meet the basic travel needs, low – end or small – sized electric bicycles that are sensitive to cost and have low – performance requirements
Later stageThe performance of electric bicycles is improved, the heat generation of batteries increases, and the limitations of natural cooling become prominentThe same as in the early stageThe problem of low heat dissipation efficiency is more prominent, affecting the battery life and vehicle performanceStill used in some low – end and small – sized electric bicycles, but gradually replaced by other cooling methods

Folding vs Regular Electric Bikes: Which is Better?

We’ve owned both. We’ve carried folding bikes up stairs and cruised regular e-bikes across long trails. So when people ask, “Which type of e-bike is better?”, we usually respond: It depends on your lifestyle. In this article, we break down the real pros and cons of folding vs regular electric bikes, based on first-hand experience and honest feedback from fellow riders. Living in a third-floor apartment without an elevator? You’ll quickly understand the magic of a folding e-bike. Most folding models weigh between 35 and 55 pounds and collapse down small enough to fit under your desk or in a car trunk. When we used to commute via train, folding our e-bikes in seconds was the only way to avoid dirty looks from fellow passengers. Verdict: If space is tight—at home or on the go—folding bikes make life easier. Let’s be real: regular e-bikes ride better. They have full-size frames, smoother suspension options, and more powerful motors on average. We noticed this especially on longer weekend rides or when tackling hills. One of our testers switched from a folding bike to a full-size Ecoe 5000W electric bike with fat tires and dual suspension, and it was a game-changer for his 15-mile daily commute. Not foldable—but definitely comfortable, stable, and built for performance. Verdict: For range, ride quality, and hill power, regular e-bikes come out on top. Folding e-bikes used to be niche and overpriced. Not anymore. You can now find high-quality folding models under $1,200 with 40+ mile range and 500W motors. Meanwhile, regular e-bikes span a much wider price range—from budget commuter bikes to $4,000+ trail monsters. You get more features with larger frames, yes—but if you’re only commuting short distances or mixing transit with biking, folding options offer excellent bang for the buck. Verdict: If budget matters, folding […]

How to Choose the Perfect Folding Electric Bike: Ultimate Guide

In today’s fast-paced cities, finding the right folding electric bike (or “folding e-bike”) can mean the difference between a stressful commute and an enjoyable daily ride. In this ultimate guide, we share everything we’ve learned—through trial, error, and real-world riding—to help you choose the perfect folding e-bike for your urban lifestyle. 1. Why We Chose Folding E-Bikes in the First Place Let’s be honest—parking sucks, traffic is worse, and public transit isn’t always reliable. That’s why, a couple of years ago, we decided to ditch the subway and invest in folding electric bikes. What started as a curiosity quickly became a lifestyle shift. Folding e-bikes gave us the flexibility to zip through traffic, fold the bike under our desks at work, and even take them on weekend trips. We’ve since tested nearly a dozen models, each promising something different. But as we learned, not all folding e-bikes are created equal. 2. The 6 Key Features to Consider Before You Buy Here’s what we now know really matters: A. Weight & Portability If you can’t carry your e-bike up a flight of stairs or lift it into your trunk, it defeats the point. For us, the sweet spot was under 50 pounds. Anything heavier became a chore—even if it folded nicely. B. Fold Size & Mechanism Some bikes say they fold, but end up being bulky after folding. We looked for bikes with intuitive 3-point fold systems, compact enough to fit in an office corner or train luggage rack. C. Battery Range You don’t want your e-bike dying halfway through a commute. We prioritized models with a minimum range of 30 miles—enough for daily use without recharging constantly. D. Motor Power A 250W motor works if your commute is flat and easy. But if you have hills or need speed, 500W […]

Technical Background and Evolution The forced air cooling stage served as a critical transition between natural cooling and liquid cooling for electric bicycle battery thermal management, spanning from the late 2000s to the early 2010s. As lithium-ion battery energy density increased from 100-150 Wh/kg to 200-250 Wh/kg, heat generation during high-rate charging/discharging surged (up to 5-8 W per cell). Natural cooling became insufficient, prompting the adoption of forced air cooling. This technology improved heat dissipation efficiency by 30%-50% through active components like centrifugal fans and axial fans. 2. Technical Principles and System Architecture 3. Technological Development and Market Adoption Stage Timeframe Technical Features […]
